Illustrator
Shinji Kanda is a Japanese fine artist and Pokémon TCG illustrator who bridges the gallery art world and the trading card game. Born in Kyoto and raised in Hokkaido, he graduated from Kyoto University of the Arts in 2013 and spent years building a surrealist fine art practice centered on hyper-dense ballpoint pen drawings and miniature shrink-plastic works before entering the TCG world in 2021.
With ~30 main TCG cards, his most significant piece is the Giratina V Special Full Art ($617–$1,100 graded).
Style Note
Kanda's defining characteristic is ultra-dense, atmospheric creature illustration rooted in a surrealist fine art practice. His gallery work uses ballpoint pen without preliminary sketches — purely improvisational, obsessively detailed linework creating pathologically detailed surreal worlds. In the TCG, this translates to dark, moody, atmospheric compositions that suit ghost-types, dragon-types, and Paradox Pokémon.
