Illustrator
TOKIYA (Tokiya Sakuba) is a Japanese illustrator ranked SNKRDUNK #8 all-time despite only 94 Pokémon TCG cards — the smallest catalog of any top-10 artist, making her per-card impact the highest in the ranking. Active from 2009 to 2020, she brought a dense, painterly surrealism to the TCG that SNKRDUNK described as almost otherworldly and pushing the envelope.
She also designed the Swimmers and Ace Trainers for Pokémon Sun & Moon. Before Pokémon, she illustrated CD covers for the Japanese hardcore electronic music scene.
Style Note
TOKIYA's style is dense painterly surrealism — highly complex, detailed backgrounds with an otherworldly, sometimes unsettling atmosphere. Her Phase 1 work (2009–2016) features insects, mechanics, human body elements, and near-future combat aesthetics reminiscent of fine art more than typical TCG illustration. Her Phase 2 (2017–2020) shifted toward a more graphic, cartoonish approach.
