Tomokazu Komiya

Tomokazu Komiya is a Japanese freelance illustrator and one of the Pokémon TCG's longest-serving artists, active since 1996 when he joined the project at age 25. A graduate of Toyo Institute of Art and Design who describes himself as mainly an oils artist, Komiya practises Primitivism — deliberately deforming Pokémon proportions with tribal, prehistoric, and children's art influences.

Style Note

Komiya practises Primitivism: intentionally exaggerated proportions, loosely applied colour, bold unconventional palettes, and visible brushstrokes. He works primarily in acrylic gouache, finishing with pencils, markers, and ballpoint pens. He describes his own style as faking it and rates his orthodox illustration attempts three out of ten.
